ROADS AND CIVILIZATIONS OF TRANSHUMANCE (UNESCO INTANGIBLE HERITAGE 2019)
Abruzzo – Italia
Transhumance is a pastoral tradition already present in prehistoric times and which developed in Italy also through the grassy paths of the tratturi. These wide paths testify, today as yesterday, a balanced relationship between man and nature and a sustainable use of natural resources. It consists of the seasonal migration of cattle to the Mediterranean and the Alps.
Transhumance was included in 2019 by UNESCO on the Intangible Cultural Heritage List, which recognized the value of the practice on the basis of a transnational candidacy presented by Italy, Austria and Greece.
Among the routes of transhumance, recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, there are also the sheep tracks found in the provinces of Chieti and Pescara.
